Genodix Receives Community Award
Durham School Services has named Genodix as one of several Bay Area companies to receive the 2004 Durham Community Service award. While Genodix has, since its founding, been a supporter of local school programs, in the past year Genodix has established programs to help the mentally challenged transition into the working world.
"We're very proud of the students we've had the privilege of training," says Lewis Grollman, head of Genodix's community outreach program. "Instead of outsourcing some of the simpler jobs at Genodix, we felt we should first look in our local community to see who might benefit from having the jobs." By creating working relationships with local schools and special education centers, Grollman has found a steady supply of willing trainees.
The Genodix program is still limited, but there are plans to expand it to several departments throughout the company. "Right now we only have a few of the mentally challenged who staff the mailroom," remarks Grollman. "A few people get confused by their handwriting, but in general the mail seems to get to where it's supposed to. Next month we're bringing in a few more students to help with the laboratory reagent inventories."
